Clémentine Delait was the proud owner, alongside her husband, of a coffee shop in France at the beginning of the 20th century. The story goes that Clémentine once saw a bearded woman in a show and confidently claimed that she could grow a much more beautiful and denser beard. Her husband doubted her and bet 500 francs that she couldn’t do it. Clémentine won the bet and embraced the attention her impressive beard attracted. Capitalizing on her newfound fame, she renamed her business Le Café de La Femme à Barbe, “The Cafeteria of the Woman with a Beard.” Her boldness and confidence turned her into a local legend and a symbol of self-acceptance.
