Why Hair, Why Now

How CHIQA, Photography and the 2025 London Design Biennale came together
Leslie Osterling is a Peruvian-British artist and photographer whose work arises from a deep curiosity about life, memory and the passage of time. She studied painting and drawing in Lima and Italy, followed by art history at the Sorbonne in Paris and plastic arts in Lima. Her journey as a photographer was shaped by both analog and digital methods, evolving through courses and self-driven experimentation. She has published the photobook Huellas, memoria y tiempo in 2019 which gathers images from intimate portraiture, landscapes and personal history. Leslie often reflects on identity, place and belonging in her work. One of her recent projects Hæirloom explores how women in Ollantaytambo’s Sacred Valley use human hair as a renewable and symbolic material. Her creations aim to hold emotion in form, to resonate with personal and collective experience.
