George Carlin’s “Saving the Planet”  remains a sharp, provocative critique of humanity’s arrogance and misplaced priorities, even more than three decades later. In his inimitable style, Carlin dismantled the idea that humans could “save the planet,” reminding us of our relative insignificance in the grand scheme of Earth’s history. His biting humor highlighted our tendency toward self-importance, hypocrisy, and shortsightedness, particularly when it comes to environmental issues.

What has changed since then? On the surface, we’ve seen increased awareness and activism about climate change, environmental degradation, and sustainability. Policies like the Paris Agreement, advancements in renewable energy, and grassroots movements advocating for systemic change have emerged. Scientific evidence about human-caused climate change is now irrefutable, and more people are attuned to the urgency of the crisis.

But much of Carlin’s critique still holds. Despite progress, significant barriers remain. Many corporations exploit environmental concerns for profit, creating an illusion of sustainability while maintaining harmful practices—a phenomenon known as greenwashing. Efforts like recycling and Earth Day events often focus on individual actions, as Carlin implied, while systemic issues such as fossil fuel dependency, deforestation, and industrial pollution persist unchecked. Societal complacency also plays a role, as large portions of the global population either deny the severity of the problem or remain too distracted by immediate concerns to demand meaningful change. Additionally, political inaction exacerbates the crisis, with many governments prioritizing short-term economic gains over long-term environmental health and failing to implement large-scale reforms.

The planet doesn’t need saving; we do.

Carlin’s message resonates because it forces us to confront uncomfortable truths about human nature and our relationship with the planet. While awareness has grown, the fundamental arrogance he mocked—the belief that we can control or “save” the Earth without addressing deeper flaws in our systems and behavior—continues to linger.

Ultimately, Carlin’s routine remains a call to humility. The planet doesn’t need saving; we do. The question isn’t whether Earth will endure but whether we’ll learn to coexist with it before we render our species another “closed-end biological mistake.”

We all wish for a magic pill to solve our problems, searching for an easy solution that requires little effort and fixes everything at once. However, complex issues rarely have simple answers. An idea can be straightforward, but bringing it to scale is a much more complex challenge. When we talk about design as a solution to these challenges, we may realize that perhaps we ourselves are the design. We are designed to solve problems. But what if, in a literal sense, we are designed to be the solution?

For centuries, humanity has altered at least 70% of Earth’s land, exploiting its resources to their fullest extent. But in the process, what are we giving back? This thought arose when I founded Human Material Loop. How can we give back? I just had to look around at the waste piling up. Newton discovered gravity when an apple fell on his head, and according to legend, the Chinese Empress Leizu discovered silk when a silkworm cocoon fell into her cup of tea. In a similar way,  an idea hit me—hair as a resource—when I looked at the pile of hair swept into the bin at a hair salon.

This realization led me to consider how we can rethink waste, find value in overlooked materials, and create sustainable systems that give back to the planet rather than simply taking from it.

The mystery of why humans grow such long hair remains unsolved. Unlike our closest animal relatives, humans uniquely concentrate hair on the head, a trait shared only with horses. One theory suggests that as early humans transitioned from forests to savannahs, long hair evolved as sun protection, acting as a natural hat to shield the scalp and prevent overheating. However, the evolution of exceptionally long hair hints at additional factors, possibly tied to social or sexual signaling, influencing mate selection and status. This complexity reflects both environmental adaptation and social evolution.

Hair, though scientifically unexplained, is a remarkable material. It is both fragile and strong, intimately connected to us yet often unruly. Even after being cut, it retains unique strength, evoking reactions and remaining an integral, dynamic part of human identity.

Human hair is a fascinating material. It grows sixteen times faster than the trees typically harvested for tropical hardwood, which can take up to 300 years to reach maturity. The global population has grown from 1 billion in 1800 to 8.1 billion in 2024. We deforest around 10 million hectares of forest every year, and with the urban population expected to more than double by 2050, nearly 70% of people will live in cities. Municipal solid waste generation is predicted to grow from 2.1 billion tonnes in 2023 to 3.8 billion tonnes by 2050. These statistics raise critical questions about the speed at which we are living. Can nature and our biology keep pace with our rapid rate of consumption and waste? How quickly do we need to act to regenerate the damage we have caused?

Small businesses, like hair salons, play a critical yet often overlooked role in the circular economy. As science and technology evolve, turning waste into valuable raw materials, a profound question arises: Are we ready to see ourselves as potential materials in this process?

This concept challenges traditional ideas of identity and calls for a reevaluation of how we think about waste. By embracing the idea of humans as regenerative resources, we can shift our mindset and contribute to sustainable systems that benefit both the planet and society. In contemporary society, hair salons have assumed a remarkable cultural significance that extends far beyond their primary function of hairstyling. They have become vital social and self-expression platforms, reflecting the diverse tapestry of modern culture. It’s fascinating to note that the average woman changes her hairstyle approximately 104 times in a lifetime. This statistic underscores the profound role that hair plays in our lives as a means of expressing our evolving tastes, moods, and identities.

However, beneath the glamour and creative potential of hair salons lies a less-discussed issue: the disposal of hair clippings. Salons in the U.S. and Canada discard approximately 31.5 tons of hair per day, and that figure is seven times higher in Europe. Nearly all of that waste ends up in landfills and incinerators, where it can release harmful greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.

Returning to the unsolved mystery of why humans can grow such long hair, perhaps we can view it as an ever-growing material designed to fulfill our need for protection and self-covering. We cover ourselves with all sorts of fibers from plants, animals, and fossil fuels; yet, for most of human history, we’ve overlooked our own production. What if the reason we grow our hair so long lies in an evolutionary design meant to protect our bodies? After all, we are the only animals using external materials to cover our bodies. All mammals share the same protein fiber on their bodies, so why has human hair been such an overlooked fiber in the production of textiles?

It’s not only a resourceful way of utilizing the materials around us, but it’s also a surprisingly cheap one.

Perhaps, when considering design solutions, we need to look at designs that are already made for us. Our hair grows, and we cut it. Why not use it to produce textiles? Is it better to burn this fiber after a happy haircut? Science and technology have evolved to the point where we can turn all sorts of materials into something useful for ourselves, often at the cost of our health or the ecosystem. But what if we could turn this byproduct of our lifestyle into a valuable material for a new system of fiber production? It’s not only a resourceful way of utilizing the materials around us, but it’s also a surprisingly cheap one. By eliminating the need for cultivation and global transport, we can produce something that is inherently natural to put on our bodies and in our surroundings.

Design researcher Nigel Cross noted that “Everyone can—and does—design,” emphasizing that design is a natural cognitive function embedded in our brains. I believe we all have the ability to design and make a change. Sometimes, the solution is closer than we think. In this case, why not use the most well-designed protein, which grows on top of our heads, for production? It’s cruelty-free, local, and distinctly human. Perhaps our egocentric view of how to save the planet should start by making ourselves useful for the future of the human species.
