Camila Barvo

Camila Barvo, a London-based mixed-media textile artist from Medellín, Colombia, explores the relationship between hair and textile fibers through soft sculptures. With a background in textile design from La Universidad de Los Andes and an MA from the Royal College of Art, her work bridges craftsmanship and contemporary art. Awarded the Highly Commended Postgraduate Award 2024 by The UK Textile Society, Camila has exhibited with RCA Sustain Lab and Blackdot Gallery at the London Design Festival. This project highlights the embodied knowledge in hair manipulation, such as combing, braiding, and knotting, which mirror textile techniques. Through handcrafted wool pieces, Camila explores the braid as a sculptural form, symbolizing connection, memory, and identity. Using henna-dyed merino wool, she creates textured sculptures that evoke the intimacy of hair rituals. Her sustainable process, notably henna dyeing, reduces water usage and promotes eco-friendly practices. This work reflects her passion for craftsmanship and material storytelling through fiber and form.
