Janine Antoni’s Loving Care

In Loving Care (1993), Janine Antoni mopped the floor of the Anthony d’Offay Gallery in London using her hair, which was soaked in Loving Care hair dye in the shade “Natural Black.” Her physical act of mopping the gallery floor evoked the bold, gestural marks of Abstract Expressionist painting, merging artistic expression with the domestic chore of cleaning. As Antoni claimed the gallery space through her performance, the audience was gradually pushed out of the room, highlighting the tension between creative expression and labor. Antoni’s work challenges the boundaries of art and domesticity, transforming an everyday task into a powerful statement on identity and gender roles.
