Sofia Saleme

Sofia Saleme is a Brazilian artist based in Lisbon, Portugal, with studios in both São Paulo and Lisbon. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in architecture and a Master’s degree in visual arts. Her work is deeply influenced by the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, which she immersed herself in during a year living in Japan. Sofia’s art explores the complexities of life and death, pain, and regeneration, using hair as a central material in her drawings, sculptures, and installations. Through her work, she confronts taboos surrounding death and discomfort, seeking to demystify these themes and explore the passage of time, the body’s ability to heal, and the value of idleness and contemplation. She has participated in artist residencies and held three exhibitions in Lisbon, with her work exhibited in Brazil, Portugal, Japan, and Chile.
