Ancient African communities crafted their hairstyles for more than just style. Across the continent, a person’s hairstyle could reveal much about their identity, including their origins and social status. Braids and other intricate styles were traditionally worn to signify marital status, age, religion, wealth, and rank within society. From kings with ornate beaded braids to special headdresses worn by new mothers, these hairstyles had profound cultural and historical significance. Hair was also believed to be a source of personal and spiritual power. Considered the most elevated part of the body, some communities believed it connected them to the divine. For example, in Yoruba culture, people would braid their hair to send messages to the gods.
