The Tradition of Baby Hair Brushes in China

The tradition of crafting baby hair brushes originated in Northern China, symbolizing the enduring bond between parents and their children. These brushes also reflect parents’ hopes for their children to grow into wise, level-headed, and studious individuals while upholding values of filial piety. The brushes are made using the hair of infants aged three years and under, with only the first growth of hair selected, as it is the only time human hair naturally tapers at the tip. In Hong Kong, a few artisans still practice this rare and fading craft.
