The History and Potential of Hair Sutures in Medicine

From the Mayans and the ancient Romans to the present day, human hair has a long history in the field of suturing. Although it has fallen out of favor in modern Western practice, some American doctors were still using it at the turn of the twentieth century. It was reportedly effective and didn’t cause infections. Despite its historical use, hair suturing likely does not have a future in developed countries. However, it shows promise as a solution for those with limited access to healthcare. An Indian medical college has conducted tests on human hair to determine its practicality and effectiveness as a suture material in developing countries, and so far, the results have been optimistic.
