On February 4, 1970, John Lennon and Yoko Ono made an unusual donation to support a charitable cause. Instead of giving money, they offered their recently cut hair to activist Michael X to benefit the Black House, a London community center for disadvantaged youth. The plan was to trade their hair for Muhammad Ali’s boxing shorts, with the hair being auctioned to support the Black House and the shorts sold to fund John and Yoko’s peace campaign. The haircut took place in Denmark on January 20, and two weeks later, they joined Michael X on the Black House rooftop to announce the initiative, holding a press conference and posing with their donated hair.
