Cornrows played a significant role in helping enslaved individuals escape slavery. During the era of slavery hair braiding was used as a way to convey messages. For example, women would braid a style called departes to signal their intent to escape. This style featured thick, tight braids close to the scalp, tied into buns on top. Another style included curved braids, which represented the roads they would take to escape. The braids also served as practical tools: they concealed gold and seeds, which helped the enslaved survive after their escape. The seeds, initially used as hair decorations, were later planted to grow crops, enabling them to sustain themselves. Cornrows were far more than just a hairstyle — they were a form of resistance, survival, and hope.
