Kiara Sombito

Based in Dumaguete, Philippines, this visual artist is currently pursuing a Studio Arts program. Their works reflect a deep desire to merge the human body with nature, using human materials such as hair and blood and fusing them with organic matter. The artist draws inspiration from post-humanism and the interconnectedness between humans and nature, as well as its natural processes. The intricate sculptures, “Where do I begin?” and “Where do I end?”, made with human hair and wire, resemble roots and rhizomes. The artist believes that to be human is to be interconnected, existing in bodies within bodies, systems within systems. Merging the body with nature involves participating in its cycles of transformation, mimicry, and transgression of boundaries, where identities are constantly in flux. This process leads to self-dissolution, becoming one with the surrounding space, and ultimately returning to the earth.
