The Long-Haired Tradition of Huang Luo

Located in China’s Guangxi region, the village of Huang Luo is renowned for the exceptionally long hair of its female residents. According to legend, thousands of years ago, a Yao girl used her hair to fend off an unwanted suitor. This tradition continues today, with Yao women cutting their hair only once in their lives, at the age of 18, during a public ceremony. Afterward, they allow their hair to grow to remarkable lengths, incorporating the cut strands into intricate hairstyles. Unmarried women wear their hair tucked beneath a headscarf, while married women wrap it into an elaborate style featuring a prominent front bun, reflecting their status and cultural heritage.
