Dreaded hair is a distinctive feature for many Rastas, symbolically setting them apart from non-Rastas, or “baldheads.” Embracing natural hair is integral to the Rastafarian belief system, and dreadlocks often form when hair is freed from artificial processes. According to Rastafarian interpretations of the Bible, dreadlocks represent a connection to the strength of Samson, whose hair was the source of his power. This style has a much deeper history, stretching back as far as the Minoans of Crete, 3,600 years ago. Some mummified Egyptians and Aztec warriors also wore dreadlocks, highlighting their widespread cultural significance across different civilizations.
