Yixue Yang’s practice explores the Daoist concept of “non-being” (Wu) as a generative force in the universe. In Daoist philosophy, “Tao” emerges from “non-being,” a state of boundless potential from which all things originate in their most formless state. Yixue’s ceramic works visually manifest this unseen energy, inviting contemplation on the intangible forces that shape existence. Her approach combines tangible forms, negative space, and the temporal nature of clay to reflect the cyclical transformation between “non-being” and “being.” Currently pursuing her doctoral studies in ceramics and glass at the University of Sunderland, Yixue integrates glass and ceramics to create powerful artworks. Using hair as a tangible link to genetic heritage, she scans and prints images of her hair on glass, symbolizing a pure state of ‘being.’ The shadows cast by the hair represent generational layers, reflecting lineage and the continuity of life.
